Letter to the editor: Trump and threats to democracy

Tribune-Review

The writer of the letter “Trump not the threat to democracy” (July 31, TribLive) begins what I see as a diatribe of falsehoods by denying that Jan. 6 was an insurrection. They tried to hang the vice president. So what exactly was it?

He continues with fictional government restrictions under President Biden. I can’t recall being told what car to buy or how to heat my home. Just good suggestions to save money and the environment for our children. And President Trump sacrificed billions for our country? What, in fines? He made out big time with tax cuts for himself and his rich buddies, which, along with his dreadfully incompetent handling of covid, has created the inflation Biden is being blamed for.

As for “insecure borders,” Congress passed a bipartisan bill to address that, which Trump nixed, saying, effectively, that he needed the issue for reelection. Predawn raids? Trump had illegally stolen top secret documents and refused to give them back. He was warned several times but refused. What else was there to do? I wonder how much he sold the missing ones for.

Republicans want to force everyone to adhere to the teachings of Christian nationalism. Why not Muslim teachings? Or Jewish? Or Druid?

I can just hear the Founding Fathers groaning in their graves.

The Supreme Court, mostly appointed by Bush(es) and Trump, has abandoned stare decisis and declared the president a virtual king with no legal accountability. Trump has said that if he’s elected we’ll never “have to” vote again. Anyone have any trouble understanding what he means by that?
