A curled forefinger, doddery and speckled with beach sand, slyly hoists a Chinese-diamond-studded shirt cuff, languid eyes drooping wristward to gauge the precise Rolex tide — er, that is, “time,” the precise Rolex time — as American- flag-cloaked coffins are carried with white gloves from a military transport plane.

On Aug. 26, 2021, during President Biden’s authorized Afghanistan withdrawal, 13 American soldiers were killed by a suicide bomber at the Kabul International Airport. On Aug. 29, Biden was present when their bodies were returned to the United States at Dover Air Base in Delaware, 49 minutes away from Rehoboth Beach.
