Donald Trump’s supporters pretend puzzlement over the anger directed at him. They forget that, before Trump declared his candidacy in 2015, politicians did not ordinarily engage in bald-faced lies, cruel slanders, snarky contempt or foul language. Personally, I will refer to him as “President” when he starts acting like one.
He shamelessly campaigned to get the Nobel Peace Prize based on his self-invented career as a peacemaker. When he did not get it, he acted like a petulant child denied his ice cream. So what did he do? He threatened to invade Greenland — even though the Peace Prize is awarded out of Norway while Greenland is part of Denmark. But who’s keeping score? Some say there are substantial oil and gas deposits under Greenland’s ice. If so, was getting them worth wrecking NATO or risking a war with Europe? This was not “The Art of the Deal,” but a failed exercise of “smash and grab.”
He has “sanctioned” tankers carrying Venezuelan oil even though only the U.N. Security Council can do that. He sold off the tanker oil, probably with some of the hundreds of millions winding up is his own pockets. So he has resorted to personal piracy while claiming he is only trying to “Make American Great Again” in the world.
Such is the genius that produced Trump’s six bankruptcies and is now supposedly working on our behalf. His self-destructive impulses are clearer every day. Who will pay for them?
