I believe Donald Trump when he says he never read “Mein Kampf,” even though he fails to complete the statement with “… or any other book.” His ignorance of history or any other serious subject is too obvious to deny.
I try ignoring this twice-impeached serial adulterer and sexual assaulter, who I believe is a racist liar, whenever I’m able. But, when he echoes fascist dictators Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, he goes too far. Calling immigrants “vermin” who are “poisoning our blood” reeks of fascist hatred on steroids, and Ku Klux Klan beliefs. Trump’s apologists say he merely has character flaws. In doing so, they expose their own with the laughable claim that he has even a tiny bit of character.
I cringe watching Trump continuing to mock deceased war hero Sen. John McCain, as he did a physically challenged news reporter. I find it disgusting when he calls veterans who fought and died in defense of America “losers” and “suckers.” I pretend not to hear his retelling of the Big Lie that the 2020 election was stolen.
I want to believe the guardrails included in the Constitution and our laws will protect us if Trump regains power. But memories of Jan. 6, 2021, remind me of the fragility of our democracy and Trump’s role in attempting to thwart the peaceful transfer of power.
Pollsters say the MAGA crowd is aware of Trump’s “flaws” but simply accept them. This cult, which was once the Republican Party, clings without shame to their disgraced leader. What does that say about them?
