Letter to the editor: Trump has created a new type of civil war
Many U.S. presidents have attempted to deflect attention from their low poll numbers by sending troops to foreign nations to start wars or skirmishes, but President Trump has more reason to get voters to look elsewhere than any of these former presidents did.
He is violating his campaign promise to release the Epstein files, and the “Trump tax” he calls tariffs hurts everyone who is not wealthy. Because of these huge problems and others, he had to be unusually creative, and it seems in realizing this would be a terrible time to start another war outside of our nation, he had the brilliant, if unconstitutional, idea to start wars on U.S. cities.
While taking money away meant to help reduce crime, he is sending troops to intimidate citizens and disrupt the economies of these cities that all happen to have Democrats as mayors while ignoring other cities with higher rates of violent crime. Of course he is mostly hoping that these actions will keep voters from thinking about his failures.
Along the way, Trump has created a new type of civil war, and the Republican Congress and the Supreme Court that could stop him refuse to do so.
