“Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing” is a frequently quoted sports statement that, if applied to all actions, would be the end of caring, love, honesty, appreciation of beauty and all morality. Sadly, it seems to be the main motivation of our president and the Republican Party leadership.

Senate Republicans have the power to prevent the conviction of the president on all articles of impeachment from the House, and their leadership has already declared that this power will be used with no consideration of the facts discovered and no interest in calling witnesses.

If Senate Republicans follow through with this, they will have in effect declared that President Trump can do no wrong and can function as a dictator. Given that the president and the Senate leadership have both indicated that they want to reduce spending on Social Security, destroy the Affordable Care Act and gut spending on environmental protection, the cost of this winning will be a high human toll.
