Of all the damage that I think President Trump has done, from exacerbating economic inequality to allowing the pollution of our environment, to dismantling worker protection regulations, to being responsible for tens of thousands of American deaths and a worsening economy, the damage that is crushing my heart is his seeming encouragement of hatred and violence.

Years ago, in my neighborhood, a little boy from a Christian family was full of wonder and possibilities. Today that young man is full of hate and intolerance. Because we are Democrats, he feels entitled to belittle us and vandalize our property. What has Trump unleashed?

In part, our exceptionalism is our diversity of sounds, tastes and customs. We embrace all religions, ethnicity and races; we are a mosaic of this world. This is our strength. Our exceptionalism is that we stand for freedom and justice for all. A goal we are still striving to achieve.
