President Trump recently stated in an interview that “We can’t take care of daycare … . We’re fighting wars. We can’t take care of daycare.” Whether or not this statement is true in light of the recent conflict in Iran is debatable. But what is not debatable, apparently in this administration, is the need for a $1.7 billion “anti-weaponization” fund to pay so-called victims of those subject to legal action by the Justice Department. This compromise between the president and the DoJ reeks of backroom dealing and manipulation.
So while we do not have enough funding to help those in need of childcare, or to extend vital Affordable Care Act subsidies so people can have health insurance, we do have money to create a slush fund to pay those lawfully convicted of crimes (most notoriously during the storming of the Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021)? How can anyone argue in good faith that this contradiction is not only absurd but downright fraudulent?
