Letter to the editor: Trump’s pattern of creating ‘truths’

Not long ago we were terrified that millions of Mexicans were illegally crossing to victimize Americans. In reality, the crime rates of illegals remain lower than U.S. citizens.

We were led to believe the Trump administration rapidly responded to contain the coronavirus pandemic. Truth is, we symbolically addressed the threat, restricting flights from China while 2 million potential spreaders inundated America from Europe.

Somehow, America’s heartland is convinced coronavirus is “fake news.” Much of the Bible Belt has embraced negligent medical advice, rejecting accepted preventative measures such as masking and distancing. Will they soon become pandemic statistics?

Now, the Electoral College is under siege. President Trump can’t repeat “the election is rigged” often enough, despite losing the 2016 popular vote. He’s confounded the issue to the point supporters are convinced a fair election is impossible.

He fast-tracked a Supreme Court justice confirmation. Will he now subvert election results to bypass the Electoral College, effectively handing the decision to the court’s newfound conservative majority?

If Trump loses, I predict supporters will agree the election was rigged and armed uprising warranted. He seemed to solicit a right-wing extremist group during the first debate.

Notice a pattern? He presents a plausible but highly unlikely scenario as truth, then repeats until believed.

He really wasn’t lying all those times he mentioned his “big” and “beautiful” income tax returns. He’s a law-and-order president.
