The other day I was wondering what Donald Trump was like in high school. To which clique did he belong? The jocks, science nerds, vo-techers, band members, academics? I think he was the “outcast” — the loudmouth, overbearing know-it-all who everyone avoids.

How did Trump, a twice-impeached, one-term loser, win the presidency? His simple solutions and big promises captured the imagination of much of the American public. He offered them hope, an alternative to the stagnation and business as usual in Washington.

Instead, we’ve seen the radicalization of the Republican Party, serious threats to democracy itself and a culture where truth isn’t worth a damn.

Only in America could this happen. Let’s pray it doesn’t happen again.
