President Trump wasn’t kidding when he named the Department of Defense the Department of War. He has now attacked two sovereign nations, neither of which posed any direct threat to the United States. Our military intelligence is so advanced we were able to surgically remove Venezuela’s president and kill Iran’s theocratic leader in a pinpoint attack, yet we also managed to ineptly murder Iranian schoolchildren. There is some minimal perfunctory presidential public dismay about the deaths of several U.S. military personnel, but the death of innocent Iranian children is not mentioned by Trump or his administration and surely not by his obedient mouthpiece, Fox News.
I remember, when campaigning, Trump was harshly critical of our nation’s involvement in futile, endless Middle Eastern wars … but here we go again — bombing our way to peace?
Something to consider is that Venezuela has the world’s largest proven reserves of oil and Iran has the third largest. Our sometime ally, Iran’s competitor, Saudi Arabia, has the world’s second largest.
I feel the unease many German citizens must have felt in 1932 when Hitler and his thugs started rounding up Jews and “enemies of the people” and incarcerating them in detention centers. In that year, Hitler was given complete authority by a compliant Reichstadt (like our supine Congress) and started on his career of conquest, death and destruction. By 1945, Germany was a smoking ruin and millions of Jews, Russians, Germans, English, Canadians, Americans and others had died.
