I agree with Thomas Hughes’ letter “History lesson on impeachment” (Jan. 31, TribLIVE) about impartiality. Our nation’s senators are obligated to put the Constitution above their respective parties. When senators failed to uphold their oath by surrendering to party bosses during the prior impeachment trial, their actions motivated record quantities of voters to take action (per the Constitution) by voting in favor of candidate Joe Biden over President Trump, who consequentially was relieved of his duties.

We have repeatedly heard the lies of voter fraud, saw the invited followers report to Washington on Jan. 6, and yes, we clearly heard the speeches of incitement to take action at the Capitol. Most sadly, we witnessed the armed conflict and destruction of the ensuing insurrection. There can be no plausible justification, or denial of the deaths, injuries, damages and security breaches that occurred on that historic day.

Senators are again being put to the test during this unprecedented second impeachment trial. Failure to uphold the Constitution further undermines the fundamental principles of this great country and puts our nation at even greater risk of future insurrections.

The enablers and actors of this recent insurrection must be held accountable with due process. The world is watching, and so are the voters who understand and know how to exercise their privileges under the Constitution.
