Letter to the editor: U.S. funding of Hamas attack

International Holocaust Remembrance Day was commemorated on Jan. 28. Shamefully, the South African delegation in the International Court of Justice in the Hague chose that date to accuse Israel of genocide for the Israeli response to Hamas atrocities committed on Oct. 7 against Israeli citizens. These accusations were sponsored by Hamas, whose charter actually calls for the genocide of Jews. Recently, the Israeli Defense Forces discovered antisemitic literature printed in Arabic (including Hitler’s “Mein Kampf”) in the homes of Gaza Palestinian residents.

On Jan. 30, the Wall Street Journal reported at least 12 employees of the UN Palestinian refugee agency (UNRAW) had connections to the Hamas Oct. 7 attack. About 10% of its Gaza staff have ties to Islamist militant groups. Two others were tracked to sites where Israeli civilians were murdered. A senior Israeli government official reported that UNRAW is a haven for Hamas radical ideology (seven of these UNRAW employees were grade school teachers in Gaza).

In 2018, President Trump canceled funding for UNRAW because of their close association with terrorism. President Biden later reversed Trump’s decision and resumed financing on the UNRAW, thus facilitating U.S. tax dollars for the funding of the Oct. 7 attack against Israel.
