Letter to the editor: Veteran stands for democracy, not Trump

Tribune-Review

As a proud United States military veteran, I pledged to defend our nation’s freedoms — an oath that does not expire with military service. I feel compelled to voice my concerns over Donald Trump’s renewed presidential bid, which threatens the democratic values I swore to protect.

Trump’s presidency was marked by division, as he routinely used fear to pit Americans against one another. His disrespect for troops and veterans is well-documented, from disparaging fallen heroes to advocating policies that harm military families. Finally, his disregard for the rule of law culminated in the Jan. 6 insurrection, a violent and criminal assault on the very soul of our democracy.

Veterans understand the weight of our duty: to defend America against all threats to our democracy. Trump’s actions and words have demonstrated that if reelected, he will abuse his power for personal gain and take away the fundamental freedoms we served to protect.

This election, honor our service by supporting a future that upholds the freedoms we fought for. We need leaders who respect our institutions, who unite rather than divide and who genuinely value the sacrifices of those who serve.
