In a 2006 Rolling Stone interview, Kurt Vonnegut, author of such classics as “Slaughterhouse-Five,” described how he he missed the days when leaders like FDR, Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. stood up for the downtrodden in our country. The interview cited a line from his 1981 college commencement speech, which predicted the current state of American politics: “Our leaders are sick of all the solid information that has been dumped on humanity by honest research and excellent scholarship and investigative reporting. They want to put us back in the snake-oil standard.”
