I take a deep breath as I cross the threshold of my apartment in Pittsburgh. Another day, another air quality warning.
Changing this stark reality is why I’m supporting Dennis McDermott for Allegheny County Council, District 11, in the primary election.
Our home is one of America’s least breathable cities. Pollution is killing us. The rich who live in areas with less pollution live to 85, while those who can’t are lucky to make it to 65. This is disgusting. To face this reality, we need elected officials who will lead on this issue.
McDermott advocates for policies that provide healing and regeneration. His opponent is tepid at best. We can’t afford to be tepid.
McDermott will stand up to the polluting companies and developers who destroy our lungs for profit. Unlike them, we can’t escape our situation with yacht trips and luxury homes. The leaders we’ve had have made this mess. We need new leaders who will help us clean it up.
McDermott’s campaign is fundamentally rooted in love, care and a commitment to climate justice. I am excited to support him for District 11, and I encourage you to do the same.
