The Jan. 6 select committee has laid afresh the horrid scenes that nearly brought down our American democracy when our Capitol was attacked by the Trumpian mob. In my opinion, Donald Trump initiated the attempted coup and deliberately tried to obstruct the electoral process, and clearly is guilty of seditious conspiracy and more.

Yet, instead of recovering from this debacle and divorcing itself forever from Trump, the Republican Party remains attached to this pathological liar. It simply boggles the mind that so many Republicans remain brainwashed and still cling to him.

Americans, however, can see to it that Jan. 6

never happens again by voting into office those who are not tied to Donald Trump. We can help Republicans purge themselves of Trump by simply electing Democrats to office in large numbers. A final rebuke at the polls would go a long way in destroying the dangerous MAGA branch of the Republican Party and thus allow for a Republican rebirth.

Voting to save our democracy should be paramount for voters in November, more important than inflation, migrants, the border or anything else; for if we lose our democracy, no other issue really matters. We’ve arrived at a frightening abyss; if Republicans are elected, we can kiss our freedoms goodbye.
