I thought long and hard about submitting this letter because I truly believe in the right to free speech. But don’t hide behind the First Amendment in order to display vulgarities.

Recently, I couldn’t help but notice a neighbor on my street who felt a need to post a vulgar display in the front yard in full view of anyone — including children — walking or driving down the street.

I have no problem with a Trump/Vance or Harris/Walz poster prominently displayed on anyone’s property. I do question the point of the derogatory Joe Biden sign in this yard. For one thing, Biden is no longer running for office. I find the use of the F-word objectionable. Apparently, when you don’t have the wherewithal to construct intelligent, cohesive points about an election, this is the result.

It’s shameful and lacks respect for the people who live around you. It does nothing to encourage real political discourse. It’s a woeful attempt at machismo. It puts our town — my town — in a poor light.

Be better than this.
