Letter to the editor: We don't need to eat more meat

The “Eat your meat” article in the July 9 edition was truly tragic. In a country where more meat is consumed than anywhere on the planet, writing an article that prompts seniors (I am 71) to eat even more is ridiculous.

It is a scientific fact that any diet sufficient in calories will always contain enough amino acids to construct the needed protein. This includes a strict plant-only diet. Where do you think gorillas get their protein? And I remind you that we are also primates.

The bottom line is, dietary studies show without controversy that the more meat, eggs and dairy that are consumed, the greater the risk of heart disease, cancer and other causes of mortality. Studies have shown that those who eat the most animal protein are at the greatest risk of kidney failure.

Shame on you.
