Letter-writer Leonard Mucci is waiting for a response to his question “How many deaths are acceptable to restart economy?” (April 27, TribLIVE).

Mr. Mucci, 39,000 people die per year in the United States from vehicle accidents on our nation’s highways. How many deaths are acceptable to you in order for you to have free use of your car anywhere and anytime you want to use it? An estimated 88,000 deaths each year in the United States are considered alcohol-related. How many deaths are acceptable to you in order to have alcohol freely available to adult citizens of this country?

I could go on, but the fact is, no deaths are acceptable, but in order to lead reasonable lives, we must accept some risk. And many people, myself included, feel that starting up the economy as soon as possible and as carefully as possible is worth the risk.
