Letter to the editor: We must oppose Pa. electric car fee bill
Beware: House Bill 1392, imposing annual fees on electric vehicles of $275 or $175, depending on size, and $75 on gasoline hybrid cars, is headed for the lame-duck session of the Pennsylvania state Senate (“Pa. House votes to impose fees on electric cars,” Nov. 21, TribLIVE) after passing the Pennsylvania House.
HB 1392 is supported largely by Republicans who pretend to trust the marketplace and favor consumer freedom. Yet they’re willing to tax their constituents during an economic crisis rather than tighten their belts over their legislative gluttony. If they really believed it was fair to put their thumbs on the scale regarding consumer vehicle choice, why would they try to sneak this bill through a lame-duck session?
Whether you own an electric or hybrid vehicle, or simply want the freedom to choose one without government interference in the future, call your state senator and oppose HB 1392 before it’s too late. Since this bill is being rushed while the public is focused on the holidays and trying to stay safe, you might also want to alert your family and friends on Facebook.
