According to the Armstrong County election website, there are three open borough council seats on the ballot for May 16 in Leechburg, with only one candidate each on the Republican and Democratic sides. The mayor’s position is also up for election, with two Democrats as candidates.

It is imperative that we have candidates to choose from, or your council members will be chosen by the sitting council members in January. Past practices for council appointments have varied and don’t necessarily follow any public notice that the position is open, and only those who closely follow council activity are aware of the vacancies. Council has often made appointments at the same meeting the position became open via resignation or death.

So if you want input on who serves on council or as mayor, you need to have write-in candidates this primary season or your options for council members may be limited to the selection by the sitting council next January.
