Letter to the editor: We should be protecting our police

As far as I’m concerned, this state seems to be going to hell in a handbasket. Regarding the article “A bill that criminalizes spitting on Pa. police includes extra penalties for people who are sick” (March 28, TribLIVE): The bill is punishing people for being sick when they spit on a police officer. This shouldn’t even be an issue.

We are so concerned about covering our faces to protect others from covid-19, but when it comes to spitting on an officer, when the offender knows he or she has a communicable disease, critics say it is unfair to have a harsher punishment than for those without an illness. How about just having a severe punishment for anyone who spits on a law enforcement officer?

I’m sick of the political correctness and legality loopholes that these people come up with. It’s time we start protecting the ones who protect us.
