Letter to the editor: We shouldn’t be punishing women

The Taliban in Afghanistan said they wouldn’t do “it” if we leave them alone and go home. But now they again are punishing women who don’t cover up from head to toe, and who travel unescorted by a man. Why would any religion or government punish women for a basic freedom that men take for granted?

Why do the “constitutional” Republicans want to take away basic choices from women? Reproductive services, including abortion, keep them healthy and allow them to fix problems that men often place on them. If the mother resents the child because she was forced to conceive, carry, deliver and raise the child for 18 years, what results can we expect? When we evaluate the damaged goods produced from rape, ignorance and poverty, I cannot help but think that some lives were not meant to be.

I thank my mother for wanting me, providing for me and raising me to love and respect all people, especially women. Let’s give all women the respect they deserve to say “my body, my choice.”
