Letter to the editor: We’re all Americans first

I don’t care if you identify yourself politically, right or left, conservative or progressive, by your national heritage, race or skin color. If you are a citizen of the United States of America, you are an American first over other identification types. If you are a visitor of this great country or work here, you are staying because you understand how great a place it is.

But we do have our issues, politically and morally. The first thing people need to do is walk away from somebody else’s view on a subject and think for themselves. Take a stand yourself based on common sense, not follow someone else. Use common sense to rationally discuss different opinions on the most important issues.

One is gun control. I support us being able to purchase guns, although I don’t own one. To our elected officials: Let’s be sensible about it. Use common sense on the subject. As an opposition point of view, you can’t simply say, “I stand behind the Second Amendment” and end the discussion. Discuss and compromise and get something done now. Too many innocent people are dying.
