Letter to the editor: What Would Jesus Do?
Remember the WWJD bracelets? What Would Jesus Do?
These bracelets were made popular in 1989 by Janie Tinklenberg, a youth minister from Holland, Mich. She designed the friendship bracelets as a reminder to her youth group to make moral decisions. The letters WWJD backwards have been deciphered as, “Devil Just Won’t Win.”
Tinklenberg’s friendship bracelets were created after the Supreme Court, in 1962, mandated that prayer in public schools is unconstitutional and a violation of the First Amendment.
Jesus taught “but when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your father who is unseen.” (Matthew 6:5-8).
When the bracelet is worn, a soft, gentle, voice inside whispers, “What Would Jesus Do?” And then quickly, you know!
