Letter to the editor: What's freedom without morals?

Tribune-Review

About 10 years ago, I tried to engage our representatives to do something about weapons. Newtown, Conn., is very close to where my grandchildren were raised.

After a few letters — which Sen. Tim Murphy actually answered and blamed mental health — things returned to status quo.

Here we are 10 years later, and how many schools have had shootings? How many children have been shot? What do we Americans possibly have to proud about?

Freedom? What does that mean without morals? We have freedom to carry just about any gun we want, say whatever we want, put whatever we want in our bodies, without any regard to the people we hurt. It is a crime, one that we should all be found guilty of, for allowing this to continue.

Murders are killing our country. Social media freedom to spread false stories is killing our country. Drugs are killing our country. But our judicial system says we are a democracy and entitled to our freedom. Well, the judicial system and democracy do not work if we can rationalize moral decay.

Politicians do whatever is necessary to keep getting votes for their parties, but, in 10 years, is there less crime? It disgusts me when they travel to grieve with the families. It is a vote-getting ploy and accomplishes nothing without action.

Total freedom is anarchy. This is where we are headed unless someone has the strength to tell the American people that they will get their freedom when they use moral judgment.

Why is it liberal or conservative? Why can’t it just be right?
