Letter to the editor: What's the plan for blight in Westmoreland?
Westmoreland County has $10.4 million available to remove blighted homes and businesses (“Addressing blight requires planning and action,” Feb. 7, TribLIVE). I wonder if the county or cities of Greensburg and Jeannette have an overall plan/strategy to replace these buildings and homes with other businesses or housing. It won’t just happen by itself!
I am originally from Buffalo, N.Y., and, over the past five years, officials there have knocked out whole blighted areas (homes) of streets and left them empty like parking lots with nothing and little plans to do much … no strategy.
It’s great to get this rot out, but we need to have an affirmative/aggressive strategy to reinvigorate neighborhoods, cities and communities rather than just using these monies willy-nilly.
We don’t need political hindsight as to what could have or should have been done and get fake political kudos. It’s time to press the mayors and county commissioners as to their plans and especially actions.
