Letter to the editor: Where to turn for the truth?

Tribune-Review

Never in my 65 years did I think that I would be living in a world of such complete absurdity and foreboding. In generations past at least we had a grasp on reality and truth. That is no longer the case. There is almost nowhere to turn for trustworthy, reliable information. As the Bible says of the end times, there will be those “always learning but never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

Emotions and feelings are overriding logic and reason, agendas and narratives are taking precedence over truth and facts. We live in a world of lies and deception, but it’s still possible to discern the truth. In 1971, the late, great singer- songwriter John Prine penned the lyrics, “Blow up your TV, throw away your paper. Go to the country, build you a home. Plant a little garden, grow a lot of peaches. Try and find Jesus on your own.” And a half-century later his words ring truer than ever.

In its early days, television was called the boob tube, idiot box and a vast wasteland, and it’s gone downhill ever since. No invention of such limitless potential has betrayed its promise to such an extreme. Yet millions continue to suffocate their intellect, deaden their conscience and corrupt their morality by viewing this garbage. And reading a newspaper is not much better.

But you can refuse to engage in the perverse deceptions being perpetrated by a corrupt world. It’s as easy as eating a peach.
