Callousness and despair. We can easily recognize the sad presence of both in our society. Solidarity and hope. How much more these correspond to who we really are! According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, 34,838 innocent children were killed through abortion in our state in 2022, the latest year with available statistics.

Two years after the Supreme Court’s Dobb vs. Jackson decision overturning Roe vs. Wade, why do the laws of our state continue to reflect callousness and despair? When comedian and HBO host Bill Maher quipped in April, “They think it’s (abortion’s) murder. And it kind of is. I’m just OK with that. I am,” he vocalized the callousness behind our acceptance of legalized abortion.

It’s hard to know which is more damaging to our culture, this callousness, or the despair disguised as compassion that insists that the destruction of human life is the best or only solution to a difficult situation. Come on, Pennsylvania, let’s lead the way in growing a culture of solidarity and hope!
