Letter to the editor: Why don’t Republicans stand up to Trump?

To all the Republicans in Congress, especially Sen. Pat Toomey: Joseph Welch, as chief counsel for the U.S. Army, in 1954 famously stood up to Joe McCarthy during his Senate hearings, saying, “Have you no sense of decency, sir?” This was a watershed moment in U.S. history and showed that a brave individual could put the national interest above petty party politics — and history rewards him for it.

Why are so few Republicans willing to show similar decency and stand up to President Trump? I believe he is evil, incompetent and unabashedly cruel — denigrates our troops, dismisses responsibility for the 200,000 (and counting) covid-19 deaths, mocks the disabled and the bereaved, assaults and belittles women, lies blatantly and constantly (over 20,000 at last count), insults American allies and sucks up to dictators like Putin. Regardless of one’s political beliefs, it is far past time to put country above party.

Where is your decency, Sen. Toomey? Show some courage and speak out against this travesty — or there may be nothing left worth protecting.
