Letter to the editor: Why the world is laughing at us

Recent letter-writers have said “the world is laughing at us.” If the world is laughing at us, here’s why.

Sixty courts, including the Supreme Court, said there is no evidence of fraud, yet former President Trump continues to try to overturn the election. Many Republican lawmakers have said in private that they know what Trump is doing is ludicrous, but are too cowardly to say it publicly.

Meanwhile, numerous Republican lawmakers are saying and doing idiotic things. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green held a raffle for a sniper rifle, stating, “In 2022, I’m going to blow away the Democrats’ socialist agenda.” She has blamed “Jewish space lasers” for, among other things, starting deadly wildfires in California, and has compared covid restrictions to the Holocaust.

Rep. Paul Gosar made a video depicting himself appearing to kill Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and attacking President Biden with swords. Rep. Ted Cruz defended a parent’s use of a Nazi salute. Rep. Lauren Boebert said she only felt safe in an elevator with Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar because Omar wasn’t carrying a backpack (filled with explosives). Just days after the school shooting in Michigan, Boebert and Rep. Thomas Massie sent out Christmas cards featuring their children holding guns.

You have Republican senators saying the Jan. 6 insurrection was just another peaceful Capitol tour and a dead Venezuelan dictator was interfering in our election.

I could go on. But this is why the world is laughing at us.
