Fires, floods, once-in-a-century storms coming every few months — for those not in denial, the climate crisis is already upon us, demanding action now. The Biden administration has plans to cut greenhouse gas pollution quickly, and here in Pennsylvania, Gov. Tom Wolf also is taking important steps, such as having the commonwealth participate in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).
With the fourth dirtiest power sector in the nation, Pennsylvania needs to cut carbon pollution from power plants if we are to prevent the worst impacts of climate change, protect public health and build a 21st-century economy. RGGI would allow us to auction off carbon allowances, bringing an estimated half-billion dollars in the first year alone. These funds can be used to deploy clean energy solutions, help workers and communities justly transition from a fossil fuel economy and redress the unjust pollution burdens frontline communities have borne for far too long.
Because participating in RGGI can help Pennsylvania move to a healthier, more just and more sustainable future, it’s no surprise that dozens of faith leaders joined with me in testifying online and on the phone in its support. All told, almost 95% of the more than 400 Pennsylvanians who weighed in over five days in December were in favor of RGGI, a number backed up by multiple polls.
Our Legislature needs to stop debating and delaying and instead join with Wolf in protecting our environment and our citizens now and in the future.
