The letter “Goose/duck hunt at Mammoth park inhumane” (Jan. 13, TribLIVE) is way off the mark. The geese in question are non-migrating resident geese who have multiplied to where they are creating a problem with their feces all over the place. This creates a problem with disease to the flock itself and also to humans, not to mention the problem of slipping and falling after stepping on it.
Goose hunting, as with all hunting, is regulated by the Pennsylvania Game Commission, and seasons are set with the help of biologists. The worst thing we can do for wildlife is fail to manage it. Nature’s way of correcting the problem is starvation and disease.
If you want to alleviate the problem, quit feeding wildlife; they know how to take care of themselves and will not congregate in one area looking for a handout.
