Letter to the editor: Wilkinsburg fertile soil of community spirit

Tribune-Review

“Where in the world of Western Pennsylvania is Wilkinsburg?” That was my first thought after reviewing search results for rental space. The borough’s website says, “Wilkinsburg is a community known for the wonderful spirit of its residents.” I’m intrigued yet recall Momma’s wisdom of my great-grandma Mamie, “All that glitters t’aint gold.”

I can attest Wilkinsburg’s spirit is alive, true and genuine. On my first day sitting on the porch, folks both two- and four-legged, walked by, and we greeted each other. True to the preview, the agent who showed the space to me offered to “walk the neighborhood.” A couple of days later, I bid, “Top of the morning” to my next door neighbor. I borrowed his cones to reserve space for movers. He dismissed it as nothing, asking, “Do you need another?”

Now I’m 30 days a Wilkinsburg Borough resident. I see a community that acknowledges its past. Learns how to make today better. One day at a time. Recent Wilkinsburg news: Residents have set up wooden food pantries. I hear the street cleaning truck roll by, and the jovial tune of an ice cream truck vendor. Grass being cut. Hedges trimmed. The call of a neighborhood hawk.

Wilkinsburg doesn’t need revival. Renewal is ripe. It is rich with the spirit of giving. Her soils are fertile.

Grandma said that no matter how much or how little you’ve got, “Divide it, sugar. You got to divide it.” Hello, Wilkinsburg. How can I be of service?
