Letter to the editor: Will our species go extinct?

I found the letter “More meat, more CO2 among resolutions” (Jan. 12, TribLive) appalling. Has the writer heard about climate change? He obviously isn’t a climatologist and chooses to ignore the findings of those who are, as well as the overwhelming evidence that climate change is real and here now. The only thing the scientists were wrong about is that it’s happening a lot faster than they predicted. More and stronger storms, wildfires, droughts and rising sea level, as the polar ice is melting. I could suggest many other resolutions he could make, like using as much plastic as he can and not recycling anything. Go ahead — rape the earth. Why worry about tomorrow?

Half the earth’s population lives in coastal cities, many of which are already being flooded by rising sea level. It is my belief that we won’t have to wait for climate change to kill us, but it will be the wars over remaining land and resources when coastal cities are drowning.

It seems to me a foolish gamble that he is right and all the scientists are wrong, since the stakes are the future of humanity.

I wonder why he needs a 315 HP engine. My Prius has all the pickup power anyone needs, and I get over 50 miles/gallon.

I can only conclude that the writer cares only about himself, not his children. The future of the earth and the next generation is at stake. Humans are displacing animal habitats everywhere, and species go extinct daily. Is there any reason our own species can’t be next? It’s our choice.
