Considering the often divisive and generally vituperative vitriol spewed on this page and throughout the media, one may be forgiven for being surprised at the quiet cooperation of residents north of Route 30 who helped to mitigate depleted water levels at the Beaver Run Reservoir (“Water authority lifts mandatory conservation for customers served by Beaver Run Reservoir,” Jan. 30, TribLive).
No extremists on either side balked over links to climate change or sought dispensation for those who claim to be disproportionately impacted.
Instead, ordinary, hardworking Americans took shorter showers, did less frequent and larger loads of laundry, and washed the salt off their cars using bucket and sponge. They stoically sacrificed for the greater good, so their neighbors would have enough to meet their own needs.
No one should be surprised, though. This silent majority did what they always do — worked in tandem to continue building this great nation. One community at a time.
They could have been forgiven for responding cynically when every day their concerns over school curriculum are scoffed at, their deeply held beliefs mocked and their proud heritage vilified.
They deserve better than stealthily imposed exorbitant property tax increases, ever-increasing fees for ever-declining services, a corrupt Congress that cares only about its own pathetic power, and an archaic two-party system that foists upon the electorate two failed presidents who behave more like monarchs than the servant leaders envisioned in the Constitution.
We all deserve better.
