WQED, known worldwide as “Mister Rogers’ station,” was the nation’s first community-supported education television station. Today WQED and Pennsylvania’s six other PBS stations are bringing instructional programming to 12.4 million people across the state during this pandemic. These emergency at-home learning services for students, families, teachers and school systems are available at wqed.org/education/online-learning-resources.
During this pandemic, WQED is working remotely and with unbudgeted resources to broadcast grade-appropriate instructional programming, creating and curating educational games and other online content, and extending learning beyond the screen through hands-on engagement and family activities.
WQED is proud of its 66-year history as “the school of the air.” We have directly served elementary and secondary school teachers for years through PBS LearningMedia, a collection of tens of thousands of interactive digital learning objects curated from the best of decades of public television’s national and local programming.
The Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 challenged us to serve everyone, everywhere, every day for free. WQED has been providing innovative educational services across our region for 66 years, along with the arts, science, musical, dramatic, and regionally focused programs loved by viewers of all ages. Today we are proud that our long-standing commitment can benefit our community in a crisis that affects every family.
