A junior at Pittsburgh Public Schools Allderdice HIgh School died in the hospital after being shot in Pittsburgh’s Homewood South neighborhood Wednesday night.

Jonathan Freeman, 16, of the city’s Stanton Heights neighborhood died at 10:01 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office.

“A high achieving student, Jonathan was known to always have a smile on his face and was very well-liked by all who knew him,” the district wrote in a statement released Thursday. “We are all very saddened by this senseless loss of life.”

Jonathan went to Liberty in Shadyside and Obama in East Liberty before attending Allderdice in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood.

Allderdice is operating on a modified lockdown Thursday, which is the district procedure whenever a student is shot and killed. The district is also providing support to students who need it.

Jonathan was shot on the 7300 block of Susquehanna Street around 7:40 p.m., according to city police.

Police responded to the shooting when they received a ShotSpotter notification and found Freeman inside a house.

Police did not release any information about possible suspects. The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call 412-323-7800.
