Petry returns
After missing five games due to a suspected head injury, defenseman Jeff Petry returned to the Penguins lineup.
Primarily playing on the second pairing the second power-play unit, Petry logged 24:26 of ice time on 26 shifts and had one assist as well as three shots on six attempts as well as two blocked shots.
While Petry helped set up the Penguins’ third goal of the contest by forward Jeff Carter and also had a role in their fourth goal by forward Josh Archibald, he was on the ice for all three goals against in the third period by Red Wings forward David Perron, including the game-winning score at the 17:05 mark.
In 53 games this season, Petry has 26 points (five goals, 22 assists).
Tip of the hat
Perron, a former Penguins forward, recorded his eighth career hat trick with three goals in the third period.
The Penguins went over two decades between allowing a hat trick to the Red Wings. Forward Sergei Fedorov scored three goals on goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin in a 7-3 home win at Joe Louis Arena, Oct. 25, 2002.
Of Perron’s eight hat tricks, none came during his tenure with the Penguins.
PK problems
The Penguins’ penalty kill was 1 for 3 on Tuesday and allowed at least one opposing power-play goal for the sixth consecutive game. Their penalty kill is 11 for 18 (61.1%) over that span.
