CLEVELAND — Safety Trenton Thompson and inside linebackers Mykal Walker and Tariq Carpenter spent the week on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad but were in uniform for Sunday’s loss against the Cleveland Browns.

The Steelers announced Saturday that Walker was signed to the 53-man roster and that Thompson and Carpenter would be elevated to the gameday roster for the second consecutive week. NFL rules allow three elevations per player per season, and Sunday was the second for each.

Thompson played significantly at safety alongside Damontae Kazee. Co-starting safeties Minkah Fitzpatrick (hamstring) and Keanu Neal (rib) are out. Neal was put on the injured reserve list Saturday. Fitzpatrick will miss a third consecutive game.

Also out because of injury against the Browns was defensive tackle Montravius Adams, who is missing a second game in a row because of an ankle injury.

Rookie cornerback Darius Rush, running back/kick returner Godwin Igwebuike and offensive tackle Dylan Cook are healthy inactives for the Steelers. As usual, Mason Rudolph served as the emergency No. 3 quarterback.

Playing against the Browns in his first game since Oct. 1 was Steelers starting tight end Pat Freiermuth. Freiermuth, who had a hamstring injury, was activated off of IR on Saturday.

Browns inactives include starting free safety Juan Thornhill (calf), reserve wide receiver Marquise Goodwin (concussion) and three healthy scratches — offensive lineman Luke Wypler and defensive linemen Isaiah McGuire and Siaki Ika.
