A-K Valley Campus Clippings: Freeport grads making splash at Allegheny
Freeport graduate Zoe Soilis, a 5-foot-7 senior guard for the Allegheny women’s basketball team, she scored a career-best 34 points Thursday to lead the Gators past Penn State-Behrend, 91-82.
She hit 10 of 19 field goals, including six 3-pointers.
Through five games, Solis is averaging 18.3 points and 5.5 rebounds.
Jenna Manke (Freeport) scored a career-best 14 points in the win over Behrend. It was her first collegiate start.
In 29 minutes, she made 7 of 8 shots and pulled down a team-best six rebounds. The sophomore forward is averaging 4.8 points and 4.0 rebounds.
IUP: Mikayla Lovelace (Leechburg) came off the bench to score 17 points in 24 minutes in the Crimson Hawks’ 86-79 loss to Glenville State on Nov. 15. The sophomore is averaging 6 points for IUP.
Geneva: Jeana Luciana (St. Joseph) is third on the team at 12.8 points per game. The senior guard scored a team-best 26 in a 96-91 overtime loss to Penn State Lehigh Valley on Nov. 16.
Pitt-Greensburg: Freshman Liz Penrose (Apollo-Ridge) came off the bench to score 13 points in an 88-53 victory over the City College of New York last Sunday in the consolation game of the Stockton (N.J.) Tip-Off Tournament.
Men’s basketball
Clarion: Kaison Branch (Highlands) scored a game-best 21 points in a season-opening loss to Fayetteville State at the Glenville (W.Va.) Tournament. He shot 8 of 13 from the field and added four rebounds. Through three games, the redshirt freshman is averaging 11.7 points and 4.7 rebounds.
Football
Westminster: Tanner Dudek (Leechburg) set the Titans single-season record for extra points with his 48th in a 28-25 victory Nov. 16 over Geneva. The freshman also has three field goals this season for 57 points, good for fourth on the team.
Washington & Jefferson: Jack Ryan (Burrell) rushed for a 74-yard touchdown in the Presidents’ 50-14 victory Nov. 16 over Waynesburg. The junior running back finished the game with four attempts for 87 yards, giving him 236 yards and three touchdowns on 46 carries this season.
Wrestling
Notre Dame (Ohio): Antony Marra (Burrell) went 3-2 at 174 pounds at the Findlay (Ohio) Open Tournament on Nov. 16. The redshirt freshman scored victories over wrestlers from Kent State, Mercyhurst and West Liberty. A week earlier, Marra scored three wins in five matches at the Ohio Open, with his only losses coming against competitors from Indiana and Ohio State.
Women’s swimming
St. Francis (Pa.): Sabrina Bowman (St. Joseph) continued to fare well in her senior season with wins in the 50-yard freestyle (24.58 seconds) and 200 individual medley (2:09.14) at Long Island. The versatile Red Flash senior also owns a victory in the 100 butterfly (57.70) against Liberty. Bowman is a two-time Northeast Conference champion (200 IM, 100 fly).
