Deer Lakes graduate Josh Yourish transitioned to distance running this winter, and he capped his freshman indoor season at George Mason by helping the 3,200-meter relay team earn bronze Sunday at the Atlantic 10 championships in Kingston, R.I.

The quartet’s time of 7 minutes, 45.68 seconds trailed conference champion Rhode Island (7:44.46) and UMass (7:44.88).

The finish helped George Mason place second to Rhode Island in the team standings.

Yourish closed his high school career with a 2019 WPIAL championship in the 800 and a silver medal in the 1,600

Grove City: Logan DeJonge (Knoch) finished second in the women’s long jump at the PAC championships Feb. 27 at Youngstown State. The sophomore jumped 16 feet, 7 inches to lead a Grove City 1-2-3 sweep in the event.

Washington & Jefferson: Faith Remich (Burrell) placed third overall in the mile at the PAC championships. The sophomore recorded a season-best time of 5:25.10. Remich also helped the 1,600 relay place second with a school-record time of 4:11.94.

Cal (Pa.): Jalen Cloud (Kiski Area) broke the school record in the triple jump Sunday at the PSAC championships at Edinboro. The junior earned All-PSAC honors with a third-place finish of 47 feet, 5 3/4 inches.

Pitt: Nikki Scherer (Burrell) made the finals of the 400 at the ACC championships, finishing sixth (54.05).

Ashland: Elizabeth Weimer (Burrell) won a gold medal in the shot put at the Division II Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference indoor championship March 1. The sophomore recorded a throw of 46 feet, 4 1/4 inches.

Clarion: Letizia Collini (Kiski Area) pulled double duty, competing at the PSAC women’s indoor track and field and swimming championships. The senior entered three events at the PSAC swim meet in York on Feb. 19 and 22 and was part of the third-place 400-yard freestyle relay and the fourth-place 800 free relay . In the indoor track finals Feb. 29, she helped the 3,200 relay take 10th.

Wrestling

Pitt-Johnstown: Allan Beattie (Burrell) will represent the Mountain Cats at the NCAA Division II championships March 13-14 in Sioux Falls, S.D. The redshirt junior qualified with a third-place finish at 285 pounds at the Super Region I Tournament at Mercyhurst. Beattie bounced back from a loss in the quarterfinals to win three consolation matches, including an overtime victory over Seton Hill’s Jacob Beistel in the third-place match.

Women’s basketball

Saint Vincent: Kayla Slovenec (Fox Chapel) earned honorable-mention All-PAC recognition. The senior forward helped the Bearcats to a 19-7 overall record and a 15-1 mark in conference play. She started all 26 games and averaged 8.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and recorded 48 steals. She scored in double figures nine times, with a season high of 18.

Baseball

Seton Hill: Tanner Froehlich (Plum) was named PSAC West Athlete of the Week. The redshirt freshman catcher led the Griffins to a pair of wins in Florida by going 7 for 11 with a double, three RBIs and four runs scored.

Cal (Pa.): Jake McCaskey (Deer Lakes) collected the first two hits of his sophomore season in a 12-8 victory over Walsh (Ohio) on Sunday. The shortstop went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Despite a 12-1 loss to Walsh on Monday, McCaskey went 2 for 4. He singled and scored the Vulcans’ lone run in the seventh.

Softball

Mercyhurst: Ally DeJidas (Freeport) hit a home run in her first collegiate game as the Lakers opened with a 9-4 loss to Davis & Elkins (W.Va.). Starting in right field, DeJidas went 2 for 3 in the second game of the doubleheader, a 10-3 setback. In 12 games, DeJidas has 10 hits five RBIs. Mercyhurst has won four of its past six games after starting 0-6.
