A-K Valley campus clippings: PSNK soccer team cruises into semifinals

The Penn State New Kensington men’s soccer team, seeded third in the Penn State University Athletic Conference Tournament, rolled into the semifinals with a 7-1 victory Wednesday over Penn State Scranton.

Sophomore Nolan Johngarlo (Kiski Area) had a goal and an assist, and junior Mitchell Kuczynski (St. Joseph) scored.

Johngarlo and Kuczynski have four goals each this season, and Johngarlo raised his assist total to six.

Also contributing to the win were freshmen Greg Guzzo (Valley), Gerald Butler Jr. (Highlands) and Thomas Cahill (Highlands), along with junior Elian Buchi (Burrell).

PSNK (9-5) visits Penn State Beaver in Saturday’s semifinals.

Football

Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Jake Sarver (Freeport) earned Presidents’ Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance Saturday against Geneva.

He placed three of his four punts inside Geneva’s 20-yard line. He had a long of 62 and averaged 42.5 yards on four punts.

For the season, Sarver is averaging 37.2 yards per punt. That ranks fifth in the league.

Junior safety Max Garda (Burrell) was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week for the second time this season.

He recorded a season-best 11 tackles and forced a fumble that resulted in a touchback.

Garda leads the PAC in interceptions (four) and is tied for second in forced fumbles (three).

Cal (Pa.): Junior Tyson Hill (Valley) caught three touchdown passes in the Vulcans’ 54-14 rout of Gannon. 

He finished with 10 catches for 167 yards as Cal improved to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the PSAC West.

In seven games, Hill has a team-best 38 receptions for 677 yards and five touchdowns.

Women’s soccer

Clarion: Freshman JC Bowser (Highlands) scored the winning goal to help the Golden Eagles beat Pitt-Johnstown, 2-0.

It was her first collegiate goal.

Clarion is 3-9-1 and 2-9-1 in the PSAC.

West Virginia Wesleyan: Senior Chelsea Hubner (Plum) recorded her sixth shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory against Glenville State (W.Va). 

For the season, Hubner has 45 saves for a Wesleyan team that is 7-6 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
