Saint Vincent began the week unbeaten in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s basketball race, and Mike Simmons is playing a significant part.
Simmons, a senior and Kiski Area graduate, tied his personal best with 19 points in a 76-63 win over Grove City, helping Saint Vincent reach 10-0 in conference play. He then had five points and nine rebounds in a 69-68 win over Thiel.
The former Valley News Dispatch Player of the Year is averaging 9.8 points and shooting 42.1 percent from 3-point range for the Bearcats (18-2, 11-0).
La Roche: Sophomore Austin Hannes (Knoch) scored 17 points, his second-highest total of the season, as the Redhawks beat D’Youville, 101-85. Hannes hit four of his five 3-point attempts.
Penn State New Kensington: The Local Lions rallied in the second half to defeat Penn State Du Bois, 92-90, on Jan. 23. Freshman Brent Ivory scored a team-high 23 points, and junior Jamison Nee (Highlands) added 21 points, five rebounds and two steals.
PSNK also lost, 123-113, to Penn State Scranton and 114-69 to Penn State Wilkes-Barre in two more Penn State University Athletic Conference games. Ivory scored 32 points in the loss to Scranton.
Women’s basketball
Allegheny: Junior Zoe Soilis (Freeport) set a new personal best with 11 rebounds in a 66-64 win over Wooster, adding eight points to finish just two shy of a double-double.
La Roche: Sophomore Nia Thomas (Highlands) scored 19 points in a 78-67 win over D’Youville. Thomas shot 7 of 10 from the field and hit three 3-pointers.
St. Francis (Pa.): Senior Courtney Zezza (Plum) scored 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds in an 85-68 win over Sacred Heart.
Washington and Jefferson: Sophomore Maria Lawhorne (Plum) scored a team-high 20 points and added six rebounds, but the Presidents lost, 72-70, to Chatham. Earlier in the week, Lawhorne had eight points and seven rebounds in a 56-43 win over Geneva.
Track and field
Cal (Pa.): Sophomore Jalen Cloud (Kiski Area) hit the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s qualifying standard in the triple jump at the SPIRE Midwest Open, placing fourth in the competition with a leap of 43 feet, 7 1/4 inches.
Pitt: Sophomore Nikki Scherer (Burrell) helped the Panthers’ 1,600-meter relay earn a victory with a season-best time of 3 minutes, 41.79 seconds at the Penn State National Open. Scherer also posted a season-best time of 55.64 seconds to finish fourth in the 400.
Men’s volleyball
Penn State: Freshman Cal Fisher (Riverview) recorded a career-high 12 kills in the Nittany Lions’ 3-0 win over Lindenwood. Fisher had a .400 hitting percentage and also had a team-best three aces.
Wrestling
Pitt-Johnstown: Senior Corey Falleroni (Burrell) helped the Mountain Cats earn a 23-14 victory over Seton Hill during their PSAC opener. Falleroni beat Seton Hill’s Alec Shaw by decision in their 157-pound bout.
