A-K Valley campus clippings: Valley grad Ross sets receiving mark at Allegheny

Vaun Ross had a record-setting day for Allegheny against Wabash on Saturday.

The Valley graduate and Gators sophomore receiver tied a 52-year-old school record for catches. He hauled in 14 receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown in Allegheny’s 36-28 loss.

Ross’s scoring catch, his first of the season and the first of his collegiate career, was for 16 yards and tied the score at 20-20 in the third quarter. His longest reception of the game went for 24 yards

He now has 20 catches for 149 yards in three games.

Ross and the rest of the Gators return to action Saturday with a North Coast Athletic Conference home matchup against Ohio Wesleyan.

Jake Tecak (Plum)

The 6-foot-5, 315-pound redshirt senior right tackle anchored the Slippery Rock offensive line as it helped the offense total 574 yards (384 passing, 191 rushing) in Saturday’s 57-7 victory over Lock Haven. It was Tecak’s 35th career game in a Slippery Rock uniform. He also started all 14 games for The Rock in the 2019 season and earned second-team All-PSAC West honors. Slippery Rock is 3-0.

Hunter Hardin (Freeport)

The Yellowjackets alum, making his fifth start in six games this season for the Grove City men’s soccer team, scored his second goal of the season in Saturday’s 3-2 loss to visiting Buffalo State in nonconference action. The goal by the sophomore forward gave the Wolverines a 2-1 lead at the 80:44 mark. Hardin, who recorded All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference honorable-mention honors as a freshman, also scored in a 2-1 victory over Houghton on Sept. 4 and now has six career goals.

Jamie Seneca (Plum)

The Gannon freshman forward scored her first collegiate goal in a 3-2 victory at Pitt-Johnstown on Sept. 8. The score in the 71st minute gave the Knights a 2-1 lead. Pitt-Johnstown would tie the score before Gannon got the winner in the 85th minute.

Hannah Irvine (Deer Lakes)

The senior midfelder on the St. Vincent women’s soccer team scored a goal and added an assist in Friday’s 3-0 home victory over La Roche. The goal was the sixth of her career with the Bearcats. She also assisted on a goal in a 2-1 loss at Wilson on Sept. 9.

Adeline Baustert (Apollo-Ridge)

The freshman goalkeeper on the Penn State Altoona women’s soccer team got the start between the pipes against St. Vincent last week and made three saves in a 1-0 victory. It was her first collegiate win and shutout.

Max Garda (Burrell)

The senior defensive back on the Washington & Jefferson football team recorded an interception in Saturday’s 28-3 conference victory over Bethany. It was one of four picks the Presidents had in the game. Garda now has six career interceptions at W&J. He tallied four in 2019.

Jake Stariha (Leechburg)

The senior on the Carlow men’s golf team was named River States Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for Sept. 6-12. He led the Celtics with a 41st place finish out of 85 golfers at the Grove City Invitational on Sept. 9.

Kelsi Zik (Plum)

The junior on the Allegheny women’s golf team carded the second-best finish for the Gators, hitting rounds of 81 and 75 to finish in a tie for fifth out of 38 golfers at the six-team Heidelberg Fall Invitational on Sept. 17-18. Zik’s scores helped Allegheny capture the team title.

Libby Conlon (Knoch)

The Washington & Jefferson women’s tennis team is 3-1 overall and 3-0 in PAC matches, and Conlon, a sophomore, has been a big part of the strong start. She is undefeated in six matches, winning three each at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles.
