When Duquesne senior big man David Dixon grabbed his 10th rebound Wednesday night against La Salle and flipped a short pass to Tarence Guinyard, little did he know he was about to become the winningest player in the school’s long basketball history.
Down a point, the Dukes (16-10, 8-5 Atlantic 10) extended their winning streak to five when Guinyard raced the length of the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse court and scored on a driving layup in the final second to make a winner of Duquesne in a play that made ESPN SportsCenter’s daily Top 10 Plays segment.
Not only did it seal Duquesne’s 62-61 victory, but it provided Dixon with his school-record 74th victory as a Dukes player, breaking the mark of 73 held by Bill Clark, Damian Saunders and David Theis from 2008-11.
The victory also marked the 122nd career game for Dixon, which ranks fifth all-time at Duquesne.
“Hey, it’s been a long time coming,” Dixon said on a video on Duquesne basketball’s X account. “I’m grateful for this, man. You know I’ve been here through all the highs and lows. Man, I’m just proud to be part of it. I’m proud to be family with y’all, man, proud to have y’all as my brothers, man. I really appreciate everything.”
Coach Dru Joyce III, surrounded by Dixon and his teammates in the Dukes locker room, lauded the 6-foot-9, 230-pound shot-blocker from Memphis, Tenn., who is one of just four players in the A-10 this season to have spent their entire four-year career with one program.
It has become a rarity in an era where rosters are turning over at a rapid rate by way of the NCAA transfer portal.
Afterwards, Joyce became emotional as he sat next to Dixon during a postgame interview session.
“First off, I just want to publicly thank David Dixon,” Joyce said, his eyes tearing up. “He’s a genuinely good person, man. A genuinely good person.”
Joyce, who was an assistant on the Duquesne staff when Dixon arrived at the school, quickly regained his composure and continued.
“Those things you guys get to see show up on the court, I get to see it every day,” he said. “Just his interaction with his teammates, his interaction with the campus and the people around the campus, the adoration he has for this city, this university is rare. You don’t see those moments, and I think this is a really big moment as he plays through his senior year. He’s battled through injuries … but Dave never shut it down. When most guys in today’s game would shut it down and opt for surgery, Dave just figured out a way.”
Against La Salle (7-19, 3-10), Dixon logged his second double-double of the season and third of his career, finishing with game-high totals in points (13) and rebounds (10) while adding a pair of blocks.
“He’s one of the best shot-blockers in the conference,” Joyce said.
Dixon’s 169 career blocks rank fifth all-time at Duquesne.
This season, while playing an average of 21.6 minutes in 26 games — 16 as a starter — Dixon leads Duquesne with 38 blocks. His 1.5 average per game is tied for fifth in the A-10.
Dixon and Duquesne play at Dayton on Saturday, tied with the Flyers and Saint Joseph’s for the fourth and final spot to determine a double-bye for the A-10 Tournament from March 11-15 at PPG Paints Arena.
