The Steelers’ Joe Haden celebrates with Minkah Fitzpatrick after Fitzpatrick return a Rams fumble for a touchdown in the second quarter Sunday, Nov. 10, 2019 at Heinz Field.

The Pittsburgh Steelers offense netted its team one point Sunday. That was enough for the defense.

The offense committed two turnovers. Again, the defense more than made up for that.

“I mean, you give them nine points, you usually lose games,” Steelers offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner said in reference to Sunday’s 17-12 win against the Los Angeles Rams. “I mean, you’re gonna lose that game.

“That defense is playing so well and getting so many more turnovers that if you turn it over twice or three times, they’re still getting four. You know, it’s been special what they’ve been able to do.”

The Steelers offense provided a touchdown and a field goal Sunday but allowed a safety and a Rams’ fumble return for a touchdown. The defense posted a fumble-return TD of its own as part of its four takeaways.

Sunday was part of a trend of the defense carrying the load for a team that lost its franchise quarterback to a season-ending injury and lost All-Pro talents at receiver and running back earlier in the year.

“I think (coach Mike Tomlin) has done a good job, in terms of talking to our defense and letting them know what we have to do in order for us to win, in order for us to get a chance to get into the playoffs,” defensive coordinator Keith Butler said, “and our guys are willing to take that step.

“We’ve got to play well. We have to play well, and if we don’t play well, we won’t give ourselves a chance to win. I think our guys know that, and hopefully we’ll prepare like that.”
