Steelers first-round pick Broderick Jones speaks to the media after reporting for camp Wednesday at Saint Vincent.

Nobody landed on the Saint Vincent College campus in a helicopter. Nobody arrived amid the blaring sirens of a fire truck.

Reporting day for the Pittsburgh Steelers was a rather ho-hum affair Wednesday.

Heck, first-round draft pick Broderick Jones didn’t even have his own transportation to Saint Vincent. Jones relied on Uber to get him from Pittsburgh to the Unity Township campus.

Jones wanted to hitch a ride with some of his fellow rookies, but he said most already had made the commute Tuesday. Jones’ flight into Pittsburgh didn’t arrive until later that night.

“I decided to wait until the morning and find a ride to get here,” he said.

Which meant relying on a ride-share driver to get Jones to his Westmoreland County destination.

“He knew who I was,” said Jones, who spent approximately $50 on the fare. “Which was shocking to me because he was a little bit older.”

The Uber driver asked to have a picture taken with Jones, and the rookie complied. Then, Jones checked into his dorm room and began preparing for his first NFL training camp.

“Just enjoy the brotherhood,” Jones said when asked what advice he received from older teammates. “Don’t be antisocial. This is the time to bond with teammates.”

When practice begins Thursday, Jones will try to unseat two-year starter Dan Moore at left tackle. Moore took most of the first-team reps at the position during offseason workouts. Coach Mike Tomlin was cagey when asked if Moore would start training camp with the first-team offense.

“I haven’t thought about it, but I would assume so, yes,” Tomlin said.

Jones said he has only one expectation of himself in training camp.

“Get in, learn and much as possible and be the best I can be,” he said. “It comes down to performing and being the best version of you. That’s what (competition) is to me. I really believe in that.”
