Steelers linebacker Bud Dupree bull rushes against Jerald Hawkins during practice Aug. 6, 2019 at Saint Vincent College. Dupree later left practice because of an undisclosed injury; Hawkins was playing with the first team because of an apparent shoulder injury suffered by left tackle Alejandro Villanueva. Also, in the background watching is receiver Donte Moncrief (No. 11), who practiced only lightly because of a finger injury.

It was a display of, as Mike Tomlin puts it, “the bumps and bruises associated with this point in the journey.”

Tuesday’s Pittsburgh Steelers practice at Saint Vincent was the most attrition-rattling of training camp. Eight players left the session early because of injuries of varying severity and to different areas of the body, and that doesn’t include a handful of others who did not practice.

Tomlin did not go into specifics on any of those who were out, other than to group as “minor things” and to say he would “probably have an update for you a little later.”

Among those whom Tomlin said left practice were starters at right tackle (Alejandro Villanueva), outside linebacker (Bud Dupree) and receiver (Donte Moncrief), in addition to two rookie draft picks: cornerback Justin Layne and linebacker Sutton Smith.

Also leaving practice because of apparent injury were running back Ralph Webb and tight end Trevor Wood.

“All those guys will be evaluated,” Tomlin said. “Hopefully, they won’t be out (long). Hopefully they’ll be the day-to-day like variety.”

Additionally, starting running back James Conner, starting left guard Ramon Foster, starting inside linebacker Vince Williams, starting center Maurkice Pouncey, starting free safety Sean Davis and third-round pick receiver Diontae Johnson sat out at least the team portions of practice.

Of all the players out, the known injuries were to Moncrief (finger), Burns (groin), Williams (hamstring), Davis (finger) and Johnson (groin). Villanueva had his right shoulder or upper arm heavily wrapped after he left practice.

In positive news, outside linebacker T.J. Watt reported no setbacks in his first practice of camp that included team sessions after he was on the physically unable to perform list because of a hamstring injury.

Also, Christian Scotland-Williamson and interior offensive lineman J.C. Hassenauer returned to full practice after missing time Sunday in the practice at Heinz Field.
